Resources for the Aging Population

Technology and Aging in Place

“Between 2015 and 2050, the proportion of the world’s population over 60 years will nearly double from 12% to 22%” – World Health Organization.

How old will you be in 2050? If you’re 31 today you will be turning 60. It’s likely you will have parents in their 80s, 90s maybe 100s. Over the next 29 years caregiving technology must bridge a critical gap for managing aging at home. But at what price? Where are the lines between prevention, privacy and peace of mind?

Main Talking Points:

  • Removing barriers to adoption
    • Technology in the home; it’s not always easy to get users to adopt. You must consider the barriers and design around them.
  • Shifting to proactive care
    • The best approaches to supporting our older loved ones focus on prevention, not just detection. Understanding routine behaviours and how engagement may be shifting over time positions care managers and families to be more proactive, avoiding worst case scenarios and improving outcomes.
  • Peace of mind
    • Aging in place successfully means promoting independence, reducing risk, and maintaining wellness for the entire circle of care. Technology that respects privacy and dignity serves everyone – providing reduced stress and improved quality of life for the older adult as well as their family and care managers
